How to Market Your Beauty Business Without Relying on Instagram.

Somewhere along the way, the beauty industry decided marketing meant posting.

Need more clients? Post more.

Quiet week? Get on Instagram.

Want to grow? Make more Reels.

Not getting bookings? You need to be more consistent.

And look, I like Instagram. I use Instagram. Social media absolutely has a place in your marketing.

But your social media is not broken.

You’ve just been taught to expect it to do absolutely everything.

Find new clients. Build trust. Educate them. Show your results. Explain your treatments. Handle objections. Generate enquiries. Fill cancellations. Get people booked.

All while you're actually trying to run a beauty business.

No wonder you're fed up with it.

Because marketing your beauty business is much bigger than what you posted this morning.

Beauty salons don't need more attention. They need more buying intent.

There’s a big difference between somebody seeing your Reel while they’re half-watching Love Island and somebody actively looking for the treatment you offer.

One is attention.

The other has intent behind it.

And we’ve become so obsessed with getting seen on social media that we sometimes forget about the person who has already decided:

I want this. Now who am I going to book with?

Where does she go?

She might Google the treatment.

She might search for somebody locally.

She might look at reviews.

She might land on your website.

She might find your Instagram after she finds you somewhere else.

That’s why I don’t believe your entire marketing strategy should depend on Instagram.

It’s one part of the journey.

Not the whole bloody thing.

Your marketing has three jobs

Inside The BKD Method, I look at marketing as a connected journey:

Be Found → Know, Like, Trust → Decide to Book

That’s it.

Unsexy. Geeky. But logical.

And once you start looking at your marketing this way, it becomes much easier to understand why doing more isn't always the answer.

Because if bookings aren't coming in, the first question isn't:

What should I post?

It's:

Where is the gap?

1. Be Found

Before someone can book you, they need to find you.

Groundbreaking stuff, I know.

But this is the part that gets missed when all of our attention goes into social media.

What happens when somebody actively searches for the thing you do?

Does your business appear?

Can Google understand what you offer and where you offer it?

Does your website use language your clients would actually use, or does it sound professional to other beauty professionals and mean fuck all to the person trying to book?

This is where Google, your Google Business Profile, your website and search-friendly content have a job to do.

You are not trying to convince somebody to want something she doesn't want.

You are making it easier for the person already looking to find you.

If someone can't find you, they can't choose you.

2. Know, Like, Trust

Being found doesn't automatically mean being booked.

Now your potential client needs to decide what she thinks of you.

This is where Instagram can be brilliant.

She can see your work. Get a feel for you. Read your posts. Look at your results.

But she might also read your reviews.

Go through your website.

Read a blog.

Join your email list.

Look at your FAQs.

All of these things help answer the questions going around in her head.

Do you understand my problem?

Is this treatment right for me?

Do you know what you're doing?

Can I trust you?

Do I actually want you doing this treatment?

Your marketing doesn't need one platform doing all of that.

It needs the different pieces working together.

You're building a customer journey, not just creating posts.

3. Decide to Book

Then we get to the bit that should be simple.

She wants the treatment.

She likes what she sees.

She trusts you.

Now can she actually work out what to do next?

Because you can do all that work getting somebody to this point and still lose them in a confusing booking journey.

Maybe she doesn't know which treatment to choose.

Maybe the booking link is buried.

Maybe she sends an enquiry and doesn't hear back quickly.

Maybe she means to come back later and life takes over.

And this is why throwing more people at a marketing problem doesn't necessarily solve it.

There’s no point throwing more water into a bucket with a hole in it.

Sometimes the answer isn't more visibility.

It’s fixing what happens after somebody finds you.

So should you stop using Instagram?

No.

Please don't read this, dramatically delete Instagram and tell everyone Steph made you do it.

Instagram can absolutely help people discover you, understand you and trust you.

The problem is relying on it to carry your entire business.

Because then every quiet week becomes:

I need to post more.

Every gap becomes:

I need to make some content.

Every wobble becomes:

The algorithm hates me.

And you end up creating more and more without ever stopping to work out whether content is actually the bit that needs fixing.

That is the shift I want you to make.

Stop automatically asking:

“What should I post?”

And start asking:

“Which part of my marketing journey needs attention?”

Can the right people find me?

When they do, do they understand and trust what they find?

And when they're ready, is it easy to take the next step?

Be Found → Know, Like, Trust → Decide to Book.

Marketing isn't chaos.

It's a sequence.

And once you can see the sequence, you can stop trying to fix every marketing problem with another bloody Reel.

Want to go a bit deeper?

I created Off The Record, my free private podcast, for beauty business owners who are doing loads with their marketing but still don't really know what's working, what's missing or why their bookings don't feel as consistent as they want them to.

It’s five honest conversations about what can actually be happening between being invisible and getting booked.

No “post more” bollocks.

Just a much clearer look at your marketing.
